Anyone know how to add text to an image in Aperture, I have used the program for a while but havent spotted an icon yet for adding text.

No, not really.
You can add text in the Book layout function, but not to the picture iteself. More like in a book layout with text below, on the side, etc.
Here is a plug-in that allows for adding a Title or Copyright, but is pretty limited.
Depending on what you're looking to do, you might try exporting and then using Skitch for adding text. That's all I've needed so far.
