You don't "install" an external drive - you have to do what is called "format the drive". To do so, do as dtravis7 has mentioned and open Disk Utility. To format, do the following:
Click on your new drive on the left hand side. Make absolutely sure you click the new drive because formatting deletes any and all information on a drive.
Click the "Erase" tab
Leave the "Volume Format:" value as it is (should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) if you are only using this for Macs. If not, change it to MS-DOS (FAT) if you plan to use this on Macs and Windows machines.
Give your HD a name.
Click "Erase..."
Once this is done, you should be able to see your new HD. Enjoy!
If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.
The drive doesn't show up on the left hand side of the disc utility of the window.
According to what I understand from the limited instruction, the drive should show up on the desktop; no luck there either.
Thanks
Is it plugged in properly? If it has an AC adapter, make sure it's plugged in. If it doesn't have an AC adapter, does the USB cable have two plugs? If it does, try plugging both of them in.
Does the included USB cable have two USB plugs? If so, try plugging both of them - this will ensure that the HD gets enough power as it is USB powered.
What is included should allow you to run it - if you're Mac has enough power to run, the HD will. Again, does the USB cable have two USB plugs on it? If so, plug them both in.
Thanks so much for jumping in to help. I tried my own cords on another Mac and the drive didn't come up there either; called Seagate and they will replace.
