My HD crapped out the other day on my MacBook Pro, so I ordered a new one. I don't have my original installation discs with me anymore (they're in storage far from where I am). I did buy a copy of Leopard, but I'm wondering if I still need the original installation discs to format the hard drive.

Thoughts? Thanks.

No you don't need the original discs. A retial leopard disc will work fine.
