Wireless keyboard - WiFi or Bluetooth?

Can someone please clarify something for me?

Is the Apple Wireless keyboard Bluetooth only, or compatible with WiFi too (ie with a built-in wireless network card)?

bluetooth only, if your mac doesnt have bluetooth, you can use a usb bluetooth adapter.

Thanks Macman. Is the adapter one of those dongles that just pops into a USB port? Is any additional software required?

I wish I had ordered the combined Bluetooth & WiFi together. Do you know if it is possible to order the combo card and install it myself, or is it hard-wired into the Mini?

yea, a usb bluetooth adapter pops in like this one by linksys .
as far as adding a bluetooth module or wifi card, I know that if you didnt get a wifi /airport card or BT module when you bought your mini, you have to get it added by a mac specialist that is licensed by apple, or have apple do it as the mini
cant be opened by anyone but apple, and the mini requires*special* bt and ap card components.

Is this a similar operation to the memory where the end-user can open the Mini but will void the warranty so Apple recomend their Service Centres do it? Or is the card a real no-go even for regular bodgers armed with spatulas?

yup, its not that you CANT, but it a. voids the warranty, b. is harder than ****, c. would take a long time, especially if you're not hardware savvy, plus you could muck things up if you dont know what you're doing.

Hmmm thought so. I think I'll stick with the dongle for now. Upgrade later.

Lee, I've had my mini completely apart and looked around. I just got the standard Mini from the apple store. Was also considering looking for a BT / Airport card to put in. After looking at the placement for those two components, save your self the trouble, put a dongle in the back. It is soo cramped in that unit and the fact that it requires special components is not a task for the lighthearted.

There are BT dongles on eBay for £5 - I'll just get one of those. There's no problems plugging it into a USB hub, say, under the desk?

I think I'll have a go at whacking the RAM up to a GB myself, though.

That is an upgrade that I would definitly recomend. I did mine a couple of weeks ago, huge performance upgrade.

no, but youd expect to get screwed on the price. lol. I dont believe apples ram comes with a heatshield on them, though I think its needed in such a small enclosure as the mini, though fitting will be difficult.

No apple gives you generic pc2700 ram at a VERY high premium. I got mine with a heatsink for $185, definitly worth the money. Especially with how close everything is the heatshield is key. I had no problem fitting mine in as you can see in my pictures. PM me if you want info on how to get that specific stick of RAM, at least you will know that it definitly fits. I didn't have to modify anything to get it to fit.

I wasn't planning on giving Apple my hard earned wonga for the memory, but instead getting it from an online PC parts retailer. BTW itloser, are you in Jersey, UK, or America?

In my original post I meant where can you buy heatshields separately? Or do you have to buy heatshields specifically for the Mini?

I'm in the US. Technically you could purchase a heat sheild seaportate from the ram itself, however I cannot say about fitment. I know that mine came with it already on it and was very snug with the memory stick itself, a different company shield might put it over the edge size wise for the mini. I would buy the memory with the shield on it already it.
