Alarm clock issues?

Help !!!

not sure which i will get.. a lovely classic 2g or a 3g. But whatever, i have heard that you cannot switch off sounds for incoming calls ,texts etc and just have the alarm on?? this must be madness as i do not want to be woken up all night my emails and work texts etc.

Am i missing something ? !

Actually, I'm pretty sure you can have the master volume all the way up and just change the ringer and alert volumes down in Settings. A somewhat cumbersome way perhaps, but that should work.
