Recently i was planning to purchase a new mp3 player never having a ipod before i was drawn to the ipod touch as it has wifi connectivity. So i was planning to buy the 8/16GB version (2nd generation). However someone i know suggested I buy the iphone instead, as he said i could get a first generation handset quite cheaply off ebay (roughly £50-£75).

Now I was wondering if I was to buy it which should I buy so that it work in the UK and what kind of contract can I expect. As this guy stated he bought his of ebay, and now has a £15 a month contract, with unlimited internet, 400 minutes and 400 text. Having searched a little i can't find anything like that. So before I'm willing to dish out the money, if i was to buy a US one would it work in the UK and what kind of contract would I realistically get? As have roughly £140 to spend and i want to spend as little as I can.

Would it not be a case of me going to somewhere like the carphone warehouse with my ebay iphone and asking to be set up?

Your friend may have a point, but just remember...

iPod Touch, one time payment and its yours.
iPhone, one time payment, but you pay for it monthly...

Unless you choose to forgo a Data Plan - i just moved my Nokia GSM sim card into my new iPhone - no plan change - and have had fun for the last 11 months. At home WiFi and when i find one on the road use that, but still worth buying outright without a plan - for me.

Yeah but how would i go about getting a data plan? How much would it be?

Does that mean i can put any phone sim into the iphone and have my current contract on it (with out the constant internet)

In Canada, our cheapest data plan adds $15/month more on top of your voice plan. This gives you 500 MB of data.

Currently there is a promotion on that gives you 6 GB for $30/month. Regular pricing is as follows (reminder on Rogers in Canada, your carrier may vary):

$15 - 500 MB
$30 - 1 GB
$45 - 3 GB
$60 - 6 GB

Having looked a little more:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Apple-iPhone-3G-8gig-Damaged-Screen-Fully-Working_W0QQitemZ290326484875QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_MobilePhones_MobilePhones?hash=item4398ce978b&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1690|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50#ebayphotohosting

I could buy this, replace the damaged screen and just use this no?
