Does Leopard come with software to just burn a cd/dvd? (not create one, but just burn it) I guess you could use itunes to burn only audio cds, but not data or dvds...

Yes, use Disk Utility. Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.

As chscag said, you can use Disk Utility to burn disk images, such as .iso files.

If what you want is to burn a data disc with files that you pick and choose, that's easy too. In Finder go to File -> New Burn Folder. Drag and drop the files you wish to include on the disc into the folder. Then just open that folder and hit the "Burn" button at the top of the window.

Currently there is no way in OS X to create a multi-session DVD. You can, however, create a multi-session CD. Download the very handy free "Burn" application to burn a multi-session CD. Obtain from here.

CDs and DVDs can not be formatted in OS X nor is there any reason you would want to. I don't even recommend doing it in Windows!

Regards.

To initialize the CD-RW for use on a Macintosh (which will erase any data currently on the disk):
Launch the Disk Utility program, which is found in the Utilities folder inside of the Application folder.
After the program has started, insert the CD-RW disk.
Highlight the CD icon on the list that appears on the left-hand side of the Disk Utilities window and then click on the "Erase" tab.
When the Erase window appears click on the Erase button in the lower right-hand part of the screen.
After the disk has been erased, eject it and quit the Disk Utility program. Reinsert the disk and the system should recognize it as a blank CD-RW disk.

That's not the same as formatting a CD or CDRW as can be done using a Windows program. You gave him the instructions for erasing a CDRW using Disk Utility. The same can be done with the free "Burn" program.

He asked about formatting a CD/DVD (RW) which means being able to write to them multiple times - just like you would do with a large floppy disk. No way to do it in OS X. In Windows, yes.

Toast Titanium allows you to do multiple sessions and add data to the CD at a later date. I have done it many times. It's set under Recorder options just before the burn starts.

From Toast's Help:
3 Click the Advanced tab to change advanced recording settings, including:
After Writing: Select what you want to do with the disc after recording it. Toast can mount the disc on the Desktop, eject the disc, or prompt you for either.

Write Session/Write Disc: Select the session option if you are creating data CDs and wish to leave the disc "open" to add more data at a later time. See Making a Mac Only Disc.
