Hi,

I will be taking a cross country trip. My challenge is I want to remain "online" the whole way and document my journey.

Ideas on how to easily and affordably:
-Keep webcam(s) active and publish in realtime (or near-time) on a website
-Have family see real time where I am via GPS and googleearth or similar?

I have bluetooth headset, cell phone, wireless USB modem, new PowerBook, 2 Logitech cams, Garmin Nuvi 200 and power converter for cig lighter. Am also considering getting a touchscreen (Lilliput) to mount and possibly a Logitech mini keyboard for when I pull over and need to navigate the laptop without removing it from its case.

Oh yeah, did I mention it will be via motorcycle? Small form factor is key!

Let me hear your creative/affordable ideas please.

Thanks!

I would tend to think this would be nearly impossible. Even the best mobile broadband services will drop between towers, and there are segments of the country completely unserved by even cell signals. Even in places where there is good signal, there are no 3G services that are available universally, which means you're talking dial-up (or even slower) service... certainly not enough bandwidth for a web cam.

As CWA mentioned, it would be near impossible to have cell access 24/7 on the trip. If you still want to document, you could always get a small video camera and record updates, scenery etc. If you want a good example of this search "mordeth13" on youtube.

hopefully your trip goes well!

Get an iPhone 3G (or 3Gs) and grab this app:
MotionX News » MotionX-GPS

The 3Gs does have the advantage of taking videos or pictures, which you can geo-tag and email out from the phone, or post on Facebook even.

I suggest you have my bike shipped over. Then I'll follow you with my video cam.
