Power Mac G4 Issues

I have old Power Mac G4 which has the following specifications,

Machine Model: Power Mac G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.3.3f2
Hard disk1
Capacity: 38.18 GB
Available: 31.8 GB
Hard disk2
Capacity: 37.25 GB
Available: 36 GB

System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0


The system is very slow, when I try to install Mac OS X 10.4.6 which came with my macbook, The powermac does not recognize the CD rom . What should I do now?

Call 1800myapple and talk to the actual apple support people and request a "replacement" OS disk. They will charge you 16.00 per disk plus tax.

Gray OS restore disks say what model they are for, like you said "Macbook". Those disks are model specific, unlike the black retail disks that are not.

Do not buy one of ebay or from a friend, when you can talk the apple support team and get the latest disk cheaper.

Sadly you are oh so close in the mhz rating to qualify for 10.5.6, your off by what,... iirc 67 mhz.

I think My superdrive is not working, can I install via usb?

No. Your machine can not boot from USB - you need firewire.

I think you can add just any IDE dvd player or burner to it. I know mine looks like off the shelf PC equipment.

Order the disk anyways and then experiment with other dvd drives.

In order to install OS X (read his original post) the drive has to have the ability to boot the machine. Neither USB or an IDE drive is able to boot a PPC machine. He needs a drive that has firewire capability.
