Transferring data from 3G to 3G S

So I have an iPhone 3G and I'm considering getting the 3G S.

What's the best method to transfer all the data (Contacts, Apps, Saved App settings, Messages etc.) to the new iPhone?

Note: The bold stuff merely highlights the IMPORTANT stuff to me ;D

Yes that is correct.

I was amazed at how simple Apple makes the process. I plugged in my new phone, it activated it for me and asked if I wanted to restore my old phone's data and settings onto it.

One long sync later and my new phone was just like my old 2G, only like 500x more awesome.

Question, how do I format everything off my iPhone 3G without affecting the backup stored on iTunes?

I haven't gotten my 3G S yet.

Plug in your 3G open itunes and click the restore button.
