Unibody MacBook Pro 2.4, best 500 GB hard drive

Hi Everybody!

I want a bigger hard drive for my MacBook Pro and have narrowed it down to 2 contendors.

On one side i have the Seagate Momentus 5400rpm 500gb Hard drive.

VS

The Hitachi travelstar 5400rpm 500gb Hard drive.

My only criteria is sound. I want the drive to be next to SILENT and long lasting. like my current hitachi 250gb hard drive in my MacBook Pro.

I would go with seagate. If you want you could upgrade to the 7200RPM version of the 500GB model. It took a huge price dive.

Western Digital Blue is the best HD in it's class.

so there selling the hitachi travelstar 5400 400gb for $118.99 and selling the seagate momentus 5400 400gb for $118.99

so is the seagate is definitely quieter? because i've read some reviews of it on newegg.com and apparently it has a lot of problems

hmmmmm. that drive looks pretty solid. but on that ebay link you gave me, that is for america. the seller does not offer free shipping to Canada, instead it is $23 canadian. so it comes up to about $105 canadian. WHICH IS A GREAT DEAL! is there anybody to second nizmoz's notion?

i actually just read the specifications of that hard drive. it is 3.5". so it will not fit in my MacBook Pro unibody. so i guess it is still between the hitachi travelstar 500 gb and the seagate momentus 500 gb

I just did an upgrade on a new MBP 15" to the Seagate 500/7200. It was so easy and simple. There is absolutely no noise from the drive. I can only hear the fans. I would highly recommend this drive.

Not fit? Several here have this HD in their laptops. It is tiny. I have one sitting in front of me. It's a 2.5" That is a error on the website.

Hitachi Travelstar 5k500 fit in Unibody MBP?

I heard that the Hitachi Travelstar 5k500's height is larger that the stock Hitachi drive.

Will the Hitachi Travelstar 5k500 fit in my Unibody MBP? (Late 2008)

The 13" Macbook and 15" Macbook Pro support hard drives with a maximum height of 9.5mm, the 17" Macbook Pro supports drives up to 12mm in height.

The Hitachi Travelstar 5k500 is 12mm in height. If you have a 13" Macbook or 15" MBP, it will not fit.

sorry i meant the Hitachi Travelstar 5k500.b if that makes any difference. I have the 15" 2.4 MBP Unibody (Late 2008)

i read the physical attributes of the 500gb hitachi travelstar 5k500.b on OWC and they say that the height is 9.5mm. so does that mean it will fit in my 15" 2.4 MBP Unibody?

Yes, it should fit just fine.

Although I would question the wisdom of storing any data I value on a Hitachi drive, particularly a first generation drive.

Hitachi drives have improved significantly in quality over the last couple of years. I personally would rather use WD or Seagate, but nothing wrong with Hitachi.

i actually was originally going to by the seagate momentus 5400 500 gb. but i read reviews on newegg saying that the install of leopard was "sluggish" so i decided to purchase the hitachi because it was cheaper and i was getting free shipping

do enough people have this drive to give back a meaningful review? i heard it was delayed and its rare in the field.....

Non of you guys using WD drives have had spindown/spinup problems? I just pulled a WD 640 out of my new macbook pro 15" because of frequent pinwheels. I read on quite a few sites that this is a common issue with WD drives in Macbook Pro unibodys.
