My ipod nano 3rd gen has been working with PC perfectly for a year. I switched to a mac over the passed few months formatted my ipod and now using it on my mac.
I find that when I plug it into my mac it freezes everytime without a doubt. I have to hold menu and the centre butto to reboot it then it will work.
Anyway experience this.
I have thought of applying an older firmware to see if it works.
