I had always used pc's and just delt with the little quirks and O.S. problems. A couple months ago I let a co-worker talk me into trying a Mac. I decided on a 15" MBP w/ 2.4 processor and 2 gig of ram. Until a few days ago I was very happy with my purchase. I was on apples website and saw a new line pro's was released. Against my better judgement I looked to see what the improvements were. I had never seen anything like this with pc's, ever. For $300 LESS I could have gotten a faster processor, double ram, and several other smaller, less important changes. I realize technology changes and the old is cheaper but I've never seen the bottom fall out of pc's with sweeping changes like I did with the release of the new MBP's. Apple needs to step up and offer some kind of deal like they are with Snow Loepard. If you bought a computer after a certain date they should offer a partial refund, voucher, upgrade or something.

I would have certainly waited less than two months had I known this was going to happen so quick. I was seriously considering buying two more mac laptops (for my wife and daughter) but that is highly unlikely to happen now.
I've never been hit below the belt like this before by a computer company and I certainly didn't expect it from apple.

Sorry to be a little bit rude, it is not my intention but ....

Do you expect Apple NOT to develop their products further? Do you think Apple are the only ones releasing new products and cutting prices?

I feel with you, I really do, but you just have to live with it. You could try to call Apple, tell them you are a new customer switching over to Mac. They might give you a $100 refund if you are lucky.

You still have a good computer you know.

Well said.

I always try to be polite but I'm losing my patience now. How many people are going to complain about a problem that is by no means isolated to Apple? All tech companies do this and if this sours your perception of Apple, you may as well not buy any tech because all companies do this. If you had waited two months, whose to say a new bump in specs wouldn't happen two months for now? Would you still be frustrated?

If you continued to wait, you would never buy tech. Your attitude is one characterized by a dislike of technological progress. While you may not admit it, if it were up to you, Apple would only update their machines when it suited you.

Perhaps we should have a forum rule against this

Not true at all. I've purchased tech products for years and have always delt with this but not the way apple has done it. All of these improvements have been out for a long time. Apple just chose to set on them and all of the sudden release them as a package. Other companies update one thing this time, something else the next time, something else the next time, ( you get the point) while gradually increasing the price for the new tech. Apple, on the other had, made several changes at once (none of it new to the tech world) and slashes the prices. The changes made to the 17" model I can understand but the 15" with the price drop is a little hard to swallow.

With Apple the timing of your purchase is critical. There is also a little gambling involved. Anytime around WWDC or any other Apple product release time you want to be very careful about what you buy.

At least you had a couple of months. My new Macbook Pro was still on the delivery truck on Monday as Apple dropped the prices *and* dropped the processor off the low-end specs.

In the grand scheme of things, what's the difference? Both methods produce the same outcome: better specs and cheaper prices.

For instance, let's say you have two products and one goes from 1 imaginary unit to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 over a 10 month period. Now, Apple releases a product at 1 imaginary unit at the same time as the other company and instead of doing incremental updates, skips from 1 to 5 ten months after introducing the 1 imaginary unit machine. Ultimately, they both reached the same goal but in a different way.

To go back to your voucher logic earlier as well, why should I not demand a new machine every time they upgrade. I bought the polycarbonate MB so why not demand an alum 13" MB when it came out and now a 13" MBP. Where does this cycle of irrational demands end? Should every company on the face of the planet give vouchers to customers when they make updates? If they did, there would be little to no motivation to innovate because every product release would mean compensating the irrational customer who continued to cavil at the changes.

No matter how you differentiate between the business practices of Apple and others in the industry, being frustrated at innovation and product releases gets you nowhere.

You also claim to be aware of the fact that some of the innovations Apple incorporated had been out for a while. If you knew this, did you not expect updates to come?

I bought a 40GB PS3 for 499.....

A few months later, they roll out the 80GB for 499 and the 40GB dropped to 399.

Bought a 20GB Xbox 360 for 399. Now you can get a 60GB 360 for 299.

It happens everywhere....

Then you were not purchasing any computers between about '92 and '04.

If you were, you would know that all graphics cards and processors were doubling in speed every 9-12 months during that time. The new game that just came out, couldn't even be played on a 12 month old computer. There wasn't a computer manufactured during those years that wasn't outdated within 2 months.

There were no incremental increases in processor speeds of 5-10% like we just saw either. 100% was closer to the norm along with doubling of bus speed, RAM, graphics processing speed, doubling of CD write speed, then when DVD's finally hit, we saw doubling of DVD-write speeds every 12 months also.

You haven't watched the price of LCD and plasma HDTV's over the past 5 years either. They were dropping in price at dizzying speeds. Sometimes as much as 50% in less than 6 months time. They've really on been affordable to the masses for maybe the last 2 years. With your attitude I would have to feel for those suckers that bought them when they were $10,000 and 6 months later a new one came out for $5,000 and then a few months later at $3000. For myself though, I am grateful to those that could afford the new tech at that time. Without those taking an interest, we wouldn't have the HD sets that the rest of us can take advantage of today.

I can go on, Blu-Ray players, the now dead HD-DVD format. I personally have 2 of those. Every industry does it and every computer manufacturer does it and has done it (especially if they've been around longer than 2-3 years).

As for the price drop, you'd best take a look around at the economy. Our company has dropped prices to pre-2000 levels and sales are still down 50%.

One recession I went through a few years ago, I had bought a house in a new subdivision. Recession hit the area about a year after my purchase. The last dozen houses sold in that subdivision went for 30% under what the rest of us had paid. We're talking well over a hundred home owners just in that one sub-division lost $20-$50,000 on the value of their homes during that time.

That computer you were tickled with a few days ago, is still exactly the same computer it was a few days ago. It has not changed. It will still do all the same things now that it did a few days ago. It is still every bit as good now as it was a few days ago. The only thing that has changed is your attitude and perception.

edit: Oh, and vansmith - you might as well get use to it. This is what happens around here every time Apple upgrades their hardware. Guess I should take my own advice and just quit reading these ridiculous things since they get me irritated also.

edit # 2: think I've got a new answer for the ones coming to the forum to ask when they should buy. Instead of buying a computer when they need one, think I'll tell them to start doing without one whether they need it or not and only purchase within the first week after new upgrades. If they don't buy in that first week, they've missed the opportune time to buy and should sit around and do without until the next one.

edit # 3: Or maybe we should suggest people not purchase any technology until the manufacturer has gone out of business or quit manufacturing that type of device. Then they wouldn't have to worry about any future upgrades. They'd always have the latest. Like the TI-99, Mattel Intelevision, Beta-Max, HD-DVD, etc. You'll always have the latest thing, since there will never be another.

This is ridiculous. I can't help it ;). I should take my own suggestion as well and stop answering these.

As much as I think is a fantastic solution, people will still complain and use the "logic" that Apple still shouldn't have made updates available since last purchasing their Mac. Remember, the world revolved around them ;).

True, but wouldn't the makers somehow be responsible for HD-DVDs demise and therefore be responsible for helping the customer upgrade to Blu-Ray? :p

Yes, for $300 less you would have had a faster processor, though probably not that noticeable, and you could have had more RAM.

RAM is always a fairly cheap upgrade, do it yourself instead of paying Apple, you can easily get your 4GB

Also, that $300 cheaper machine (I'm assuming you mean the base model 15" Pro) has Nvidia 9400m integrated video only, where your machine has a dedicated card.

with all due respect, people who buy apple product know when to expect new updates and such. Or at least the ones who know how to use their money wisely! It surprises me that you are this frustrated when you could just as easily held out on buying one until the 2009 wwdc!

Most people don't even know what the WWDC is, let alone know how to use google to see when the rumored updates are coming out.

Then we get hordes of people posting threads like this, and not to mention the occasional forum troll posting spam.

Agreed. Only people keen on the Apple news are aware of the updates. On top of that is the fact that it's supposed to be a developers conferences so many people may be led to believe that no news will be coming. Or, most people won't care and will realize that the machine they ordered is still good.

I think any time you invest in a product (I would call a $1500+ computer an investment) you need to do the research. its not difficult to find out what any company's impending product launches are. I did this the first time I bought a new mac and have been royally ****** at myself for not waiting the week...

...but that's the point...I was upset at mySELF ;)

I've never seen a company be so secretive about impending hardware updates like Apple has been. All speculated updates were just: speculation. If you paid attention to the media, you would have been aware of this. For instance, people have been speculating tablets and netbook style Macs from Apple for a while now which has proven to be untrue.

It seems to me the op should be really happy ! He can now buy those two machines ne claims he was interested in at a better price ! Would you really want to buy a product from a company that didnt roll out upgrades ? And I love how he had to throw in the dig at apple and praise the pc for upgrading slower !

Yes Apple is beyond secretive, I have friends that have worked for Apple designing their website and they had him in a trailer with guards watching him the whole time. Was not even allowed to have his phone with him, and they had to escort him to the bathroom.

Even they they are secretive about hardware updates, it happens in a pattern and we can predict it.

I understand what your saying - new product launches tend to be impossible to predict. but I think there's enough information that gets around the online mac community that you can get an idea of product updates. It hasn't exactly been a secret that there were some laptop updates coming. Even if just the fact that the white macbook was just updated to a processor speed above that of the 13" AL macbook was a bit of a tip off.

Its not exactly foolproof, but considering there IS an online mac community to look towards before a purchase and knowing Apple's track record, its hard to justify getting ticked off at the company for their normal update cycles.
