First the reason for this installation is to sallow the bookmarks to be copied to Safari.

In downloaded Firefox and thought I installed it but all I've got is a .dmg file on the desktop. What do I do next?

Thanks,

Bob

Double click the DMG file. It will open and give you instructions on how to proceed. Let me know if you have any trouble.

How?
Which key is PrtScreen?
Can I just paste it to this window or do I need to make an attachment?

Good. Drag the Firefox icon on the left to the Applications folder on the right.

Then once you drag the Firefox Application to that folder, open Applications and it will be there. If you plan on using it a lot you can drag it to the Dock also from the Applications folder.

Ok that worked.

So what is the other Firefox logo at the right of the screen printout. May I safely drag it to the trash.

Thanks,

Bob

That is the mounted disk image of Firefox. Drag it to the trash and it will unmount. You can trash the firefox.dmg also if you want.

Reviewing this I don't understand what I did. What's a dmg file?

When I clicked on it, I created a large icon on the desk top...what is this type of icon called and what is it used for?

I had to drag the Firefox icon inside this large icon to the applications folder. What else could I had done with this icon? What other folders would be alternate locations for it?

I've got the Switching to Mac missing manual but I haven't found anything about this. (I looked under DMG and Firefox installation.)

Thanks

Bob

I will ask you a question. Do you know what an ISO Image is on a windows system? If so, a DMG is a Disk Image and very much like an ISO Image. You click on it and it mounts on the desktop. The Program's/Application are inside the DMG just like on an ISO. You have to copy the contents to your hard drive.

On Firefox and a few other OSX Applications they make it easy by having a Window that opens with the Applications folder right there so all you have to do is click on Firefox and drag it to Applications right in the window and it will copy it to the real applications folder on the hard drive.

A DMG file is like a disk image, think of it as an MSI (Microsoft Installer) on the windows file. When you open the DMG, it mounts itself as a disk. You open the disk and depending on the program either drag the application into your applications folder OR run the installer package. Installer packages seem do only be for programs that require changes to files outside of your user directory and it requires your password.
