I tried a quick search of the forum without being logged in (first time, I guess) and up came the anti-spam verification. I have no problem with it but am wondering why it is there. What could a spammer do to this forum by searching?

They could use a program that makes multiple requests for searches. Sort of like a DDoS attack. A ton of requests at one time could bring the server down or make it really slow. The CAPTCHA helps the server know that it is a person and not a robot (or program) that is making the request.
