I've had my Imac 14 months now.
Couldn't be happier I made 'the switch'

Except when I travel, which is rare, I use my Imac almost
every day. Somedays I'm on for 2 hrs or more, others only
15 or 20 minutes.

I always turn it off though.

Poll question is a simple Yes/No

Yes meaning you always turn it off.

No means you almost always leave it on.

It is such a beautiful machine and it doesn't even make a sound. Why would you turn it off? The obvious would be o save energy maybe, but I just let it go to sleep.

This is my strict ritual with my MacBook:

Before powering down:
Quit all applications
Turn off AirPort (if on)
Eject external HD
Shut off BlueTooth

power down

After powering down:
Unplug keyboard
unplug iPod USB connector
unplug external HD
unplug mini DVI adapter
unplug power cord
wipe down Mac with the black cloth
close screen
finish wiping down Mac
I place the cloth on the top of my Macbook, with the little imprinted Apple facing upwards towards me

---

If leaving the house for several hours or most of the day, I put to sleep without ejecting or unplugging anything, and close the screen.

If leaving for less than an hour, or just leaving the computer, I let it go into sleep mode by itself without closing anything.

---

Yes, I have a problem.

If you do leave it on make sure that you set the power management option to turn on "sleep" the hard drive helps keep the hard drive living longer.

I've always left my iMacs on except when I'm away on holiday.
My old G4 was still going strong when I sold it after 7 years service, same HD.
Hopefully the new one will last as long (doubtful!)

Mine is scheduled to power down every night. I take mine into my bedroom and watch slingbox until I fall asleep. It won't go to sleep with sling on full screen.

People turn off their Macs? :p

The sleep option works great, I've gone months without turning off my Macbook. Heck, I don't even turn it off when taking it on flights.

Honestly, I just let it sleep 99% of the time.

The only time it gets shut off is:

1) I'm going away for a long time
2) power outtage

Mine never gets shut off, I run uTorrent like 24/7 so i just let the screen turn off, and leave it on all the time.. If I travel, I just put it to sleep.

Well, technically mine is never shut down - when I'm done, I close the lid which puts it to sleep.

I just turn the screen off when I'm not using my Mac.

I do use it a large proportion of the time though...

I normally let mine sleep, however - I live in the lightening capital of the world so if there is even a chance of a thunderstorm I turn it off and unplug the cable, power cord and connection to the printer. That way I will not lose anything. I had a lightening strike once before that damaged my old computer and I am not going thru that again.

What are the chances of that happening again?

Chances are pretty good in Florida. It's happened to my dad a few times. :p

We never turn our Macbooks off, not even to travel. The desktops are only turned off when we go south for the winter, other wise the iMac just goes to sleep and the old Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio) that has already had it's 8th birthday and is still working great, gets the monitor turned off when not in use. None of our Macs ever get a reboot unless an install requires it. Not like the Dell or Compaq sitting in the floor that had to be rebooted at least once a day.

I leave mine on most of the time. The only time when I ever turn it off is sometimes when I'm on long train trips or out of my hotel room for the day.
