Game switch to desktop then back?

iMac 20" 2.8 ghz and Macbook Pro 13" 2.53 ghz
I like to play Command & Conquer on my imac. How do I go to the desktop to do a quick email check or IM check without having to quit the game and exit. Is there a shortcut key to do this then go back to the game instantly?
