have a 17" powerbook G4

I used to have a Laptop PC and I could make it so I could close the
screen and the only thing that would happen is the screen would turn
off. Is it possible to achieve this on my powerbook?

Thanks - Dave

Your Mac's Specs
12" Apple PowerBook G4 (1.5GHz)
By default, a Mac will sleep when the lid is closed. Most of the time, this is the behavior you'd want.

PowerBooks can be operated with the lid closed, if you connect an external display, keyboard, and mouse. The machine will still go to sleep when closed, but it will wake up when you touch the keyboard or click the mouse.

Using an iBook with the lid closed is not recommended, because the lid will interfere with air circulation and could cause the machine to overheat. An iBook will not wake up with the lid closed, even with an external display and mouse connected.

You can try using Sleepless (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17893) to force it to stay awake.

So far as I know the same heat issues apply to the powerbooks as well, be careful not to melt your screen.
