Is there a way to have Finder automatically expand the columns to fit the widest file name when I open it up? I'm constantly having to double click the column width... a bit irritating when I'm going back and forth to retrieve files. Or can it at least "remember" my settings for each column?

thanks,

The Solution: Option (Alt) Drag Column

The Solution: Option (Alt) Drag Column

What you do is Alt+drag (Option+drag) a column to the desired width. Not only does this expand all columns to the same width, but the next time you open the Finder, it's also remembered this width. Hooray - finally an answer!

Hopefully this will be an automatic function in future operating systems!
