I'm planning to use migration assistant to bring files from my old powerbook G4 onto my macbook pro. The easiest option seems to be to use the firewire 800 ports on each machine. However, firewire cables seem to come in different pin types- which do i need for this job? I am guessing 9 pin on both ends. Advice welcomed!

Assuming the PowerBook has FW800, you would need a 9-pin to 9-pin. If it's the older FW400, then it would be a 9-pin to 6-pin. Check here:

IEEE-1394 Firewire Cable
