Document attachment problem

Your Mac's Specs
2.4GHz intel core 2 duo, Mac OS X running 10.5.8
If i scan a Document and save as a pdf then write a email and attach it, it displays as the complete document and not an attachment.
How can i get it to show as an attachment !
