My problem is simple. I do not know wich one I have and I don't know how to tell the difference.

All over the web some people say iMacs have Mini DVI and others say they have Mini DisplayPort.... But wich one do I have?

I have a iMac 2.66 Ghz Rev. 8,1 - Late 2008.

Here is a picture:

If you have the nVidia integrated graphics, then you have a mini Display Port. If you have Intel integrated graphics, then you have Mini DVI.

To check, click on the Apple in the top left corner and select About This Mac and then click on More Info. On the left pane, under Hardware you'll see Graphics/Displays. Click on that and see what it says next to Chipset Model and Vendor.

First of all, I don't have OSX installed. I have Windows 7 RC Build 7100.

And second, in iMac Rev. 8,1 there isn't Intel nor Nvidia based graphic.

It's a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT.

So what does that make my port?

That would make yours the previous generation which would have mini-dvi.

Your owner's manual should have a pic describing all the ports on the machine.

You can also google both "mini-dvi pic" and "mini display port pic" to compare.

That's a mini-dvi port.

I recognise it from my wife's Alu iMac

According to Mactracker, there's no Late 2008 iMac, there's Early 2008 and then Early 2009

iMac 8,1 is Early 2008

The Early 08's have Mini-DVI
The Early 09's have Mini-DisplayPort

In that case, it's is most definitely Mini-DVI

Connecting?

I too have the Mini DVI ports, Is there a way to go about connecting 2 identical imacs (2008 models) both with mini DVI ports, so they can work as a dual display?

We thought at first it was a mini display port, but the cables are too small.

Thanks!
