10.5.7 update

10.5.7 Combo Update

seems like the standard software update is causing problems for a lot of people so you can just download it from above. if you are not on 10.5.6 now then you need the combo update.

also during install your mac may stop after some time on a blue screen. i just powered down and restarted the mac after i felt it was no longer doing the update and then it fired up finished the install and restarted itself ready to go.

Thanks Fletch. I was just coming to post about the 10.5.7 update. You are faster than I am! :D Grin

So far installed it on my iMac G5 Isight with no issues at all with Software Update. On the G5 it did the Double Reboot so do not panic.

This URL tells pretty much everything the update fixes.

Hmm, there doesn't seem to be much of a compelling reason to upgrade. I think I'll hold off this round. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

How could you not be excited about improvemens to the "...accuracy of Unit Converter, Stocks, Weather and Movies Dashboard widgets." Well worth the upgrade ;).

I'm sure there is much more to the update than just that. Like all updates though, I'll let everyone else be guinea pigs for a few days and then install. I don't want to be one of those early adopters who gets screwed (there is always a group).

If you get a screen that says digital signature for this package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by Apple it means the servers
are overloaded according to AppleCare when I called it in so more people than
they thought would be jumping in on this.

Yeah, I'm with vansmith and kash. I'm going to wait a week. My Macbook was working great yesterday, no need to go and change that.

Pfft, no where near as important as the unit converter widget improvements ;).

Ok, so the security updates look pretty significant. I'm still gonna hold off until after finals though. No need to be messing with a working computer right in the middle of something important.

Van, I know you are half joking about that Unit Converter update but when the bug was discovered I saw so many bashing OSX and calling it garbage over that one issue! :D They said that bug proves OSX can't even get Math correct.

Kash, Remember, Macs just work! :D

It's funny because shortly after posting that, I remember this thread. I tried it again and it worked but I remembered I don't have Safari 4 beta installed (just haven't gotten around to it since I installed the new HD).

That is another irrational argument about OS X. With that logic, I could very easily argue that Windows can't protect itself and instead relies on the user to do so with UAC.

They fixed the power profiles - that is, you can now choose between "Better Battery Life" and "Better Performance" directly from the menu bar again. That's reason enough for me.

That's why I recommend backups with SuperDuper. Worst case scenario, you can always boot from your external. Time Machine is great for its "set it and forget it approach", but SuperDuper can very quickly save your bacon and grants you much more latitude to do things like system updates whenever you please.

Although it wasn't mentioned in the updates, does anyone know if the update improved performance on games with the nvidia chipsets?

I don't have an nvidia chipset (nor have I installed 10.5.7 yet) but it does state, "Improves performance of video playback and cursor movements for recent Macs with NVIDIA graphics", in the link provided by dtravis7. Maybe not what you're looking for but it does signal improvements.

Yeah, I had read that, but it's so vague, that I was wondering what, if any, improvements for nvidia would help those of us who are trying to migrate our game playing to Mac ;)
