External Display and sleep

Hey All, Should (hopefully) be receiving a 24" monitor, keyboard and mouse on Monday for my birthday. I very rarely shut my MacBook all the way down, usually just close the lid.

When the MacBook is hooked up to the display (only), will I just be able to click Apple > Sleep and have the same effect? Then press a key on the ext keyboard to wake it again? ...makes sense to me!

I think you will I have done it before on my mac..
