I've bought a Mini DVI - DVI adapter from apple and have connected that to a DVI - HDMI lead, which I've plugged into my TV. I can see my desktop theme fine on the tv (ie. my desktop picture), but not my actual desktop (so no mouse arrow, files, open applications, harddrive etc appearing on the tv).

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong?

Open up System Preferences - Displays

The picture they give you with the two screens - the one with the white bar at the top is the one the menu bar will be on and is the primary display. In that picture - look at the location of the two screens in relation to each other (you can change this also) - this will tell you which direction to move your cursor to get from one screen to the other. If you want an app on the other screen, drag it and drop it on the other screen.

You can also drag and drop that white bar to change which monitor is the primary display while you have the external connected.

You can also just put a check mark in the mirror displays box and you'll have the identical image on both screens.
