I used this technique...
1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
2. wait for terminal show
3. release keys
4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
5. press enter
6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
7. press enter
8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
9. press enter

to get rid of an admin account which I didn't have the password for, but had a lot of music and other files on that account. I got past that little intro video and the computer and its asking me "do you own a mac". Where do I go from here without deleting my old files?

Do you have an admin account that you do have a password for? If so, you could simplify your life by simply using that account to reset the password on the other.
