How big of a hard drive can you put in a G4

Older G4s have a limit of 128 gig if the disk is an internal because the ATA controller was 32 bit
It seems that any model released after June 2002 will be able to format and see larger hard drives, so check your macs specs at EveryMac

Louishen is correct. What model Powerbook is this? Can you give us the basic specs like the CPU speed and screen size? If it's one of the later Powerbooks any 2.5" IDE (ATA) Laptop drive will work. If its an older Powerbook, 120GB IDE (ATA).

i believe (correct me if i am wrong) all models with a DVI port will take the largest IDE hard drive. the largest IDE notebook drive is 320GB(i have know idea where to find one but it is made by Western Digital). You can by 250GB on most sites such as Newegg.com
