I want to send and receive text messages with my girlfriend while she's at work, she has an iphone. What is the best way for us to communicate from my computer to her iphone, for free?

I would prefer a method like a "chat" window that I could keep open all day.

imho: if she's at work, she's not being paid to be texting you all day long

Yahoo now allows text messaging back and forth if you have an email account with them. You just click the arrow next to new and choose text message.

You can also use Yahoo! Messenger to send and receive text messages. That would probably be the best way.

well , she prefers texts b/c there's no auto notify feature for email on her iphone. In other words, if she gets a text it pops up on her iphone screen and makes a noise, but if she gets an email she needs to go to her inbox to read it and may not know about the message for several hours.

Who is her phone carrier? Check her phone carrier web site, you should be able to text from there or send a email message to her number.

AT&T

using it right now - it was easy to set up (and yes she needs to have a yahoo account or you can use a dummy like I did)

You can send an email to the other persons number to send a text, it follows a certain format - for example on verizon it's [email protected]

here: SMS gateway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is a list of the sms gateway email addresses, there are a lot on there, the us ones are on the lower portion and you'll have to find your carrier if you'd rather use sms, or on some of them mms

I have skype to talk to my parents while I am out on the road. It's slow, but it lets me talk to them from my iphone while they are on a computer.

She could also get IMPlus or IMplus lite and setup a MSN, Yahoo, ICG or AIM account, same for you and you could chat that way

She does not need an yahoo account. You are the only one who will need to sign up for one. You simply add her number to it and it allows you to msg her.
