Macbook Pro locking up in performance mode

I have a new macbook pro 15 inch with the 9400m and 9600 GT when i switch to performance mode and try to run a game say wow it plays for a while then the whole screen goes black i still hear sound but have to turn off and turn back on again. I have the same problem running other games when i bootcamp into windows xp so my feeling is its to do with the 9600gt is this a known problem is there a fix that doesnt mean i have to send it to apple.

It does sound like a graphics issue. Best bet is to make an appointment with the genius bar at your local Apple store and take it on in and have them look at it. Since the machine is new and under warranty the repair or replacement will be free.

Have not heard of the issue regarding that particular card. It does, however, sound like a hardware issue with the card overheating. Doubt that will be taken care of without sending it in.

?? - have heard reports of same day, 2 days and longer than a week.

If it was mine and less than 30 days old, I'd ask for a replacement instead of repair. (Nicely, a lot of people have been surprised by Apple's responsiveness.)

If you're near an Apple store and they do the repair in house and since you have use of the machine except when using the 9600 - I'd ask for them to get the part in and then schedule for a drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon if you don't have another computer to use in the interim.
