Expose and spaces

I have read the 'spaces' info.
BUT I still cannot figure out Expose,spaces.
I have 6 things chosen in spaces on my system preferences, but none of these are in spaces that show on the dock.
I am so confused.
Anyone want to attempt to explain this to a dummy>

Spaces: From what I can tell, what you choose on the system preferences page is where the applications you have chosen will open when you invoke them from either the Dock or Finder. They are NOT there automatically, you have to start them. When you do, they automatically start in the selected spaces location.

Expose just shows you everything in the current desktop, un-layering the windows and letting you quickly get to what you want on that desktop.
