iTunes used to add a little speaker on the left side of track that was currently playing, but they don't do it anymore... has anyone noticed that?

It's there for me and I'm running 8.1.1. I assume you are talking about the speaker next to the checkbox.

What have you changed/done recently?

Latest version here also. Speaker on left side right next to the checkbox of song playing.

no changes as far as I can remember. I have the latest version as well. I can't figure it out. Another thing that is happening that didn't use to happen before is this....

I select an album so only that album shows on the screen... when that album is done playing it moves on to the next album... before the music would stop playing at the end of the last track of the album I selected.

I am posting a screenshot to show you that I am not going crazy or something...

You can see that the song is playing. But no "speaker icon" on the side of that song.

You are not looking at the list view there, you are looking at the results of a search. It is not going to show what is currently playing in the search results.

edit:
There is something funky goin' on though. Depending how long I leave it sit in a search, when I go back to list view, it does not have the speaker icon.

Either search or list view it won't work for me. The only time I see the speakers is if I play it from the CD before I import it into iTunes.

Try this: After selecting a song, go to another list and then hit Command+L. That will take you to the currently playing song with the icon...

When I am in the list view and use the command + L it works. But the speaker does not show when it's in the Album View. But oh well.. I guess they changed a couple of things. Cause I remember seeing this speaker everywhere. And I also remember the music stopping after the it was done playing an album (album view mode)

I think the problem is where you selected the track:

If you start playing a song in one list and then drill down to that album in your main library view, it won't show the speaker - even if that's the song you're playing. But if I start playing a song from the album view, then I get the speaker...

@bobtomay:
In case you're wondering: Your fonts are all jagged! You need to turn font smoothing off for large sizes if you want smooth fonty goodness back :)
(You can't really tell so well on my screenshot)

You're right. The speaker shows according to where you selected the song. Weird, it didn't use to be like that. And it used to show up on search results too.

Aptmunich,

Yeah, I know. I'm one of those that really likes the appearance of fonts under MS better than OS X. Particularly when I've got it connected to one of my big screens. And changing font smoothing to 12 looks a lot clearer on a 55 or 65" screen, at least to me. That's one of the first things I change after a fresh install. Haven't played with it in over a year, maybe I'll give it a try again though and see if I can handle it.

Ah - I figured you'd know about that, considering all the advice you spread here :)

But I can't help but cringe at the default "font smoothing" settings under windows XP... I always have to install Safari and turn on the mac-like smoothing option.

But to each his/her own!
