Is there any software that will tell me if my hard drive is doing ok? I have a few sata drives that I want to throw into enclosures for backing up, they are mostly filled up and a few years old but I want to test them before committing them to back up usage, I have an IMac, wondering if there is anything I can do to test them via usb.

Just fine if the iMac is an Intel machine.

Connect to an external case, plug into the USB2 port and go to Disk Utility and with any luck the external should appear there. Run Verify Disk and/or Repair Disk to make sure they are okay, and if so reformat.

If the iMac is a G5, G4 or G3 model, it is a Power PC (PPC) and connection will need to be by Firewire if you want to make the external drive/s bootable.
