Hello my esteemed friends,
For a few months now my ibook has occassionally switched itself off, requiring the remove-battery-unplug-and-hold-down-power-button-for-5-seconds treatment. I've been meaning to get a new power supply and battery but hadn't quite got round to it...
Now when I switch on I either get a black screen, or the grey screen of death. Here is what I have tried so far:
- Reset PMU and pram/nvram (no change)
- Booting in to open firmware (doesn't work)
- Boot in to Target disk mode (doesn't work)
- Booting from CD (doesn't work)
For the CD boot I have even had it apart to get a CD out that was stuck. What I'm really hoping to find out is peoples understanding of what the issue could be, and answers to the following:
- Surely open firmware is stored on a chip on the logic board, right?
- If the above is true do you think this sounds like my logic board has bitten the big one?
- Is it possible that the PM issues I was having have simply wiped the open firmware and removed the macs ability to even attempt a boot?
My feeling is that it must be the logic board but I'm no expert and would like peoples opinions (I can't afford to take it to the apple store!).
Thanks in advance, The Monk
