I am trying to restore a 160gb hard drive in my mac book with a 260gb backup while omitting 100gb of music and possibly images to make it fit. It seems as I cannot modify the files in the backup folders that time machine made...

does anyone know how to perform this restore so that the size difference isnt a problem?

Yes. Buy and install a 500 GB hard drive in your MacBook before restoring.:p

You can modify the files in your backup, but you need to be able to restore it somewhere first (another computer?). Also, when you remove the files from your backup, you won't have those files anymore.
