I have replaced the hard drive in a siblings white macbook and have followed all instructions i have found.

I restored the system from a time machine backup and in disk utility it has been recognised as such

When booting will not get past startup screen (grey screen, apple symbol with spinning symbol and then restarts), this is done constantly and never progresses

Help please

I assume the time machine back-up was a back-up of the exact mac you upgraded?

Anyhow, you may be better off restoring the OS from the original restore disks, then using Migration Assistant to bring all the other programs and settings back from the time machine back-up

yes it was a backup done earlier today

Through either the laptop or by me playing about to get it to work my backup went funny so i am going to reinstall the old hard drive back it up again and then try again

I will probably do as you suggest when i try again
