WD ex drive is recognized but will not mount on Airport Extreme

WD external drive is recognized by the airport extreme but will not mount. The drive is not recognized by disk utility/time machine when plugged into airport extreme. (USB) All works fine when plugged directly into MacBook Pro. Please help and if you can, walk me through it as if I were a Mac idiot. Thank you.
