I am trying to become the super user. I followed the directions for directory utility. Now there is a user on the computer called "other" but i am not sure what the username and password is.

Thanks.

I think you may have not followed the directions correctly for logging on as the ROOT user or, as you call it, "super user". Read the following Apple KB article on how to enable the ROOT account. Link

You might want to delete the account your created called "other" but first make sure it's an account that you do not need. Also, I might add.... be very careful when logged on as ROOT. All files and folders are accessible in this mode including system.

Regards.

I couldn't agree more with this. Logging in as root or switch user (su) ti root at the bash prompt is risky unless you absolutely know what you're putting in.

How to Log In as Root

I had to do the same thing so I could install an old version of Quark (6.5) on my intel iMac running 10.5.6 today. When using the directions to enable the root account, a user called "other" was created on the login screen. Just use the username "root", and whatever password you created. That will let you log in.
