I'd like to get back into taking macro shots in and out of the water. Is anyone using an external (strobe or otherwise) flash to take the shots? It seems as though I'm having an issue with the lens shading the shot I'm trying to take and since the flash is on top, I doesn't adequately illuminate the subject at such close range.

This isn't a problem underwater since I have as strobe mounted on a flex arm. But on dry land I'm having issues with this. In daylight, either my lens shades the subject, or the front of the subject is shaded because the sun is behind it etc... lol.

I'm a terrible photographer...

Here is my current setup.

Before I got the ringflash I used a flash on a bracket.

SOlson you gotta keep at it.. dont give up. i have only had my camera for 2 months now i think.. i have thought myself everything i know.. i just try to go out every chance i get and shoot anything.. cars passing by to flowers at a garden, you just gotta keep at it.. reading a such will only take you so far.. just go out a shoot.

Good advice, and you're right, the only way to get better is just to keep at it.

Also, nice setup Chris! I guess that answers my question about the arm and strobe. :Cool:

That was actually with a cheapie Nikon 3MP point and shoot.

i saw that the other day.. i knew i saw the account before.. and low and behold it was yours. Thanx.. i am really trying to be great at this .. it would go really well with my graphic design. i am in fact going to a orchid garden again tomorrow... they just opened the greenhouse, it was closed last time i went.
