issue with backing up iphone

I currently upgrades to a new iphone 3G. I went to synch my 1st generation iphone to itunes before synching my new phone. After about 45mins i noticed that my iphone was not backed up on itunes & it was still in progress. Has anyone else run into the same issue? If so, what can i do to fix this problem?

I too have noticed that the backup process seems to have gone back to a slow crawl. *** is Apple doing? They give here and at the same time take away there.
I'm not sure how to remedy this tho. Prolly a new update will fix it.
