Copying a CD to a HDD

I have multiple photo CD's that I want to backup to my new external HDD. when I drag the CD icon onto the HDD it just creates a shortcut to the CD. do I have to open the CD and drag the folders or can I just the copy the whole CD with one shot?

Try Option-drag to the external HD icon rather than the desktop.
