Disk Utility "Gathering Disk Information" for a long time

I'm trying to create a new disk image. I go to Applications->Utilities and open Disk Utility. I got the "Gathering disk information" message and the rotating circle and went out to breakfast...three hours later it's still "Gathering disk information". Should it be taking this long or should I kill and try again?

You do not give any information about your machine. Intel or PPC and how much memory installed? Hard to assist without that info.

Intel Dual Core (2.4 GHz), 2 GB RAM, running OSX 10.5.6.

Has now been about 6 hours since I started up Disk Utility.
