• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I was wondering if anyone knows how to burn movie files (.avi for example) onto a dvd so that it would function and play on a normal dvd player. Thank you for all your help.

Roxio's Toast does that sort of thing on-the-fly.

You can get toast for free. Or you can get a program called Prism (for free), which converts .avi into other formats like .mov or mpeg-4 and other formats.
I use toast-start with .avi file, then choose 'DVD-video' and burn on a cd-plays in my DVD players.

Toast is a pay-for, commercial product. If you're referring to pirated software, be aware that we don't permit discussion of illegal activity on this forum.

No i said free, not illegal. If there are none for free that are legit, then forget it.

Burn is free and should do the job. Give it a try as the price is right.

Another user here on the forums had issues going to DVD format. I tried to duplicate it but it worked for me every time.

My testing was done on a G5 Power PC machine. I will later when I get back home try Burn on my Intel Mac and see if I run into the problems you are having and get back to you.
