Preview in Macbook Pro locking up

When I try to view NEF files,,,, do I have to convert them to be able to use Preview?????

Yes. I don't believe preview is going to open any of the RAW formats from any of the camera manufacturers.

I kinda figured that as I just converted some and they preview fine in Jpeg.
