Well, some camcorders have USB connections, you can check that - or depending on when you got your mac book, you may be able to return it and get either:

2009 white mac book (has 400 firewire)
2009 Macbook pro (either 15 or 17") and an 800 to 400 firewire converter.

Unfortunately, I think it was kinda silly for apple to not have firewire on their main macbook laptops, but oh well.

You may be able to find some sort of firewire -> USB converter that might work. I know a long time ago, the breakout box for the pinnacle liquid edition pro kit was a usb2.0 unit that had firewire in/out so I know firewire to usb can be done (yes, I actually still have mine, unfortunately, it's only windows)

Good luck!

any idea how to connect camcoder to mac?

You'll need an adapter. However, they are expensive! Here's one you can consider: Link
