Hi All,

I am a relatively new Mac user and this operation is probably exceedingly simple i just don't have the base knowledge yet (having only used windows for the last 12 years)

I downloaded an xvid-component for my quicktime player because initially it would not play media files i had downloaded from the internet. Download this codec didn't fix the problem so i used VLC for a few weeks. I was looking in the library folder for quicktime and found the xvid component and trashed it. Now quicktime works with all the media files i want it too, but i can't empty the trash of this troublesome component.

When i select empty trash it comes up with an error message "The operation cannot be completed because the item XviD_Codec is in use." Is there a way through terminal to stop the system using this file and trash it that way? Any suggestions anyone?

Many thanks :)

It's actually Command-Empty and you may need to logout and then back in first sometimes. Or do it from Terminal.

Or do it from Terminal.
To do this, in case you don't know how, is to execute the following commands in the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app):
Code:
cd ~/.Trash
rm <name of file>
Replace <name of file> with the name of the component that you are unable to remove from the Trash.
