OS question

I have a pre internal DVD G4. I want to know if I can install a new OSX from a DVD when I have to use an EXTENAL drive. Anybody know?

Yep, my Mini came with a DVD as did my eMac, both are 10.3.

I think my iLife 5 was also on DVD.
