Opening Windows Zip Files - How?

I downloaded "stuffit" expander to do this.

When I select the .zip file and select "open with" stuffit expander, I am asked for a password (I know the password and enter it)...

...then... nothing happens. No error message that I've entered the wrong password, nor any visible result.

This problem is possibly compounded by the fact that I accidentally moved my download icon (on the dock menu) into the trash. That in itself is really annoying because I don't know how to restore the download icon. I'm suspecting that the file might be unzipping into the download icon space, which I've lost.

Help!

The "download" icon in the dock was just an alias (shortcut) to the Downloads folder in your Home directory. Did you delete that folder as well? If you did, it is fixed simply by recreating the Downloads folder. If you have the folder and want it in the dock again, it is as simple as dragging it from your Home directory to the dock.

OS X has support for zip files built in. There is no need to install any 3rd party software to decompress zip files.

It's just unzipping to a different directory than the desktop. Do as vansmith says and go to your Home folder -> Downloads.

Or use Spotlight to find the unzipped version of the file.

thanks - found an alternative fix

thanks van and miles, with your help I found the files. Kind of.

I don't know how the default application works nor where it is sending everything. I can't even find the application ("archive app) in the application nor utilities folder - to adjust the settings and see where it is by default sending files being unzipped.

What I have done though is adjusted the settings in the stuffit application so that I now know where to find the unzipped files.

Fabulous and thanks.

Cheers

Personally, I have had enough of StuffIt. I would recommend BetterZip, which works in a more traditional, logical manner.

I don't know how the default application works nor where it is sending everything.
It should decompress the contents to the folder where the archive itself is. Where did it end up decompressing to?
