I have just purchased a MacBook white with a 13.3 inch and are unable to get Safari or Firefox to maximize past the dock unless i set the dock to hide, safari wont even maximize, is that a Mac thing or am i missing something?

You probably ARE maximized -- it's just that the application won't expand to cover the WHOLE screen...in other words, it's only going to "maximize" as far as how big you'll need at the given time.

Not covering the dock is the default, unless as you say you hide the Dock using Finder Preferences. That way an operator can access other programs without having to go into Applications etc .

Thanks for the replies, i will just have to keep the dock hidden just so i can see more of the web page.

I hide the dock as well. With Spotlight, Quicksilver and cmd-tab I never use it. I also use this in Safari to "maximize" the web page I am looking at:

javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(1920,1200);

Obviously, this is for a 17" MBP. Your resize to values may differ!

Alternatively you could move the dock to the side, as webpages usually aren't wide as much as they are tall.
