is there a way to change the time machine settings so it doesn't back up as often?

i really do not need hourly backups. daily at the most.

There are Time Machine widgets available that can help you achieve that .....
If you Google for it, I'm sure you'll find something.

I like the hourly backup, because I make frequent changes to files and it allows me to ' undo ' some changes and go back to previous versions without loosing too much work.

where is your time machine drive any?is it an external?if so, then don't plug it in unless your ready to do backup. Once your external HD is attached it will automatically backup. Time machine is set to do it that way. You can go to options do in time machine preferences and take out the folder that you don't want to be backed up
