No, personally I would stay away from any refurbished hard drive regardless of price. You should be able to find a NEW hard drive for your eMac at comparable prices. Keep looking.
Plus there is one HUGE advantage of buying this drive brand new.
Seagate have a five year warranty on their drives whereas this second hand unit, and that is what refurbished is at the end of the day, offers 12 months at an additional $14.00 and is not all that cheap!
i'm wanting to upgrade the hard drive on my emac. i've been reading about firewire enclosures. is that what i'd need to transfer all of my existing hard drive's data to the new hard drive?
Depends what you want to do with the external. The eMac is a PowerPC (PPC) model and if you want the external drive to be bootable and keep a backup OS on it, then yes Firewire is the way to go and the drive will be bootable if formatted in Apple Partition Map and then OS Extended (Journaled).
PPC models generally will not boot from USB, even USB2.
without an ultra ATA 100 connector, i can only install a 136gb hard drive on my eMac, and i want to put a 320gb. i'm kind of unsure of what this exactly is. can anyone help? where can i find this?
Let's be clear here, there seem to be two threads of thought, 1) an internal hard drive and 2) and external hard drive (F/W or USB2). I'm beating the same drum yet again, but download Mactracker to see what upgrades you can do with your eMac.
1) Internal - You can put up to 1 Tb internal 3.5" hard drive inside the eMac, as long as the drive is ATA (also known as IDE). In my opinion, 1 Tb is overkill, and I'd suggest 500 or 750 maximum.
2) External - once again, you can have up to 1 Tb, as long as it's ATA, and as Harry has pointed out, you should use a firewire or combo F/W-USB2 enclosure. To that I would add ... get one with an Oxford chipset. They cost a bit more, they're available from Find the latest Performance Upgrades, Firewire and USB Hard Drives, SATA, Memory, Laptop Battery, and more at OWC.
